Recorders at St Johns
Recorders have been around for many years and are an ideal first instrument for children to learn.
The children at St Johns begin learning the recorder in Year 2 during their weekly music lesson. They begin by learning how to hold the recorder properly and produce a nice sound. Alongside this they also learn and develop the ability to read standard notation. The fundamentals of music are very important when learning an instrument and these are reinforced through every lesson. There are visuals to help the children know where to put their fingers and often backing tracks to play along to making their learning more enjoyable.
Children are encouraged to develop their playing by working towards different awards, which are given out as karate belts for their recorders. They achieve these by playing a set piece correctly.
Their learning progresses on the recorder throughout Years 3, 4 and 5. This takes place in addition to their music lesson where they enjoy a weekly 30 minute lesson every other half term.
At the end of the year, the children from every class puts on a concert for their parents to show what they had been learning throughout the year.
In Years 5 and 6 the children have the option to join the recorder club which runs on Thursday lunch time in the music room.
